Intro to Improv
Throw out the rule book and fly by the seat of your pants in this fun intro to improv piecing featuring wonky houses and trees. Create a few blocks or build an entire village! In this 4-hour workshop, you will learn how to create a variety of houses and trees without a pattern, designing and building as you go and playing with color and design.
Class supplies:
- Sewing machine in good working order
- 50 wt cotton thread
- Scissors
- Rotary cutter
- Cutting mat
- Ruler
- Seam ripper
- Pins or clips
- Wool mat/iron (optional)
- Fabric
- A variety of fabrics in colors that you like together
- Things to consider when choosing fabric (we'll talk about this in detail at the beginning of class):
- Background fabric: Each house background will use approximately one fat quarter. Consider choosing a low-volume fabric line you really like to keep your blocks from looking too scrappy - unless of course that's the look you're going for!
- House/tree fabric: Fat quarters and scraps work well. Think about contrast - you want each component of your house to stand out! Do an internet search for a color wheel and consider choosing colors that are opposite one another.
- Detail fabric: Collect some small pieces of fabric with animals, people, symbols, etc. to add to your windows and doors. Or, bring some fun fabric to fussy cut and I'll teach you how to incorporate it into your design (think: sun/moon/clouds for the sky, cars in the driveway, etc.)
