| Beginner: | When preparing for a beginning quilting class, it's helpful to know some basic prior knowledge to make the learning experience smoother and more enjoyable.
Prior knowledge required:

Thread Your Machine: Familiarity with how to thread a sewing machine and wind a bobbin

Sewing Machine Parts and Functions: Understanding the basic parts of the sewing machine, such as the presser foot, feed dogs, needle, and bobbin.

Straight Stitching: Comfort with sewing a straight line, which is the foundation of most quilting seams.
If you do not know how to use your machine, please sign up for a Machine Owner’s class first (Brother, Juki, Baby Lock). The teacher may have recommendations for machine settings, but will not know the details of everyone’s machine. If you’re unsure, please bring your manual with you to class.
| | Confident Beginner: | In addition to the beginner knowledge required:

Seam Allowance: Knowing what a seam allowance is (usually ¼” for quilting) and how to maintain it while sewing.

Using a Rotary Cutter: If using a rotary cutter, being familiar with how to safely and accurately use it along with a cutting mat and quilting rulers.

Measuring and Cutting: Knowing how to measure fabric with a ruler and how to cut accurately to prevent wasting fabric.

Quilt Block Assembly: Understand basic quilt construction including piecing, matching seams, adding borders, and finishing techniques.
| | Intermediate: | For an intermediate quilting class, students are expected to have a stronger foundation in quilting techniques and sewing skills.
You should be confident with:

Machine Settings: Comfort with adjusting machine settings, such as tension, stitch length, and stitch type (especially for quilting-specific stitches).

Specialized Feet: Familiarity with using quilting-specific presser feet, such as a walking foot, quarter-inch foot, or free-motion quilting foot.

Patterns: Reading and following pattern instructions, and an understanding of basic quilt abbreviations.

Independent Work: Cutting and preparing materials prior to class and completing the project on your own after class.
