The Good the Bad and the Ugly

Posted: 7 January 2012 at 10:22 p.m.

I recently had my view of humanity rocked a bit. Items were discovered missing from the shop.

Now I know that theft occurs... in other shops. But at Quilter's Corner, I welcome everyone into the shop with a smile. I want to make people feel at home here. I strive to create an environment that is friendly and safe such that people want to spend time in the shop, work on projects and grow a community. Given all that, how could someone come into the shop, smile and talk with me, then take merchandise without paying for it?

While reviewing the security tapes, I kept thinking... "I'm not going to see anything", and then, "If I do see something, I hope it's someone I don't know". Well, not only did I see the thief take items, but it was someone who is a frequent customer... ughhhhh. My heart still sinks thinking about it. Rocked.

When I bought the shop 6 months ago, I determined if we experienced a theft that I would prosecute the offender. I am following through with that and will be going to court in the next month or so. I take this very seriously and can only hope that something good can be wrung from this experience.

Meanwhile, I will continue to open the shop doors and welcome everyone with a smile. I will strive to make it a safe and friendly environment where we can grow a supportive and creative community. So while I've seen some of the ugly, I will persist in seeking the good in people.
